The opening of the Library's exhibit on the life and works of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1894) was marked by a reception and lecture on October 25, 2007. More than 70 people gathered to view rarely seen items from the Library's collections, along with never-before exhibited sketchbooks and drawings owned by Hawkins' family. The exhibition, which was timed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Hawkins' birth, was co-curated by Valerie Bramwell, great-great-great granddaughter of Waterhouse Hawkins, and Robert McCracken Peck, Academy Senior Fellow and Curator of Art and Artifacts.

The lecture featured a biographical sketch of Hawkins by Mrs. Bramwell, and an overview of his contributions to art and science, by Bob Peck.

A happy result of this exhibit is the book published by the Academy of Natural Sciences. All in the Bones is a beautifully illustrated collaboration between Valerie Bramwell and Bob Peck, the first book-length study of the life and work of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
